The Musicians:
Dave Caruso: Vocals, guide piano

The Song:
Another highlight off the "In the Face" album by Caruso was this chorus of a 70s tune which was made famous by The Youngbloods.  Its message of "C'mon, people now, smile on your brother" was a nice marketing tie-in for a group consisting of four brothers.

There are four different a cappella vocal parts.  Each individual part was performed and recorded three or four times by Dave, as closely to the original pitch as possible, before sweetening the final mix with effects.

The opening section is simply a reversed tape of the forward section, minus "C'mon people now," with the addition of a piano guide track.  It was created by physically removing the tape reel and threading it through the machine and was inspired by The Beatles' backward masking on "Revolver" and "The Beatles" (a.k.a. "The White Album").  An early idea for the album's liner notes was to include a transcription of whatever was supposed to have been sung there, even though it's actually backward nonsense:

"Uhm, be outer than the door full of the doubt
Where they'd be staking out, but they're resolving all odds."

Translation: "Paul is dead now, miss him, miss him, miss him..."
